Take Notice: The opposition to a casino proposal for the Nittany mall in Centre County explains why they are trying to stop it

Take note: Why they oppose a casino being built at the Nittany Shopping Center in Centre County.

Pennsylvania casinos are a major industry, generating millions in revenue for the companies as well as taxes for the state, townships, and cities they serve. One of these casinos could soon be built in Centre County's Nittany Mall, if the state board responsible for overseeing the industry gives it approval. The project is being opposed by some.

Anne Danahy spoke to two of the people involved in opposition to the casino during this week’s Take Note. Andrew Shaffer resides in State College with his spouse and two children. He is one the organizers who tried to block the casino's approval. Susan Strauss is a resident of College Township, where the proposed Casino will be built. She is the single mother of six adopted kids and also organizes opposition to the casino.

Here's the conversation:

Anne Danahy

I thought it would be helpful for us to have some background information about this proposed casino. Ira Lubert, a former Penn State trustee who is now working with Bally's, are the developers. They also wanted to build what is now called a mini-casino at the Nittany Mall. Andrew, would you be able to bring us up to date on the project? Where are things now?

Andrew Shaffer

The public input hearing was held in August last year, but it was not widely reported here at State College. The meeting was attended by the casino developer as well as his supporters. They presented their support at the meeting. Most of the rest didn't know that this was happening. College Township then granted the approvals necessary for the casino's development at the local level. The Pennsylvania gaming board is currently accepting public feedback on the casino. The feedback period will close on June 12, at 5:05 p.m. Anyone in the community may still submit comments to boardclerk@pa.gov prior to June 12. These comments will be reviewed by the gaming control boards as they review the licensing decision. A small group of us have written numerous letters to local media publications and to the editor since the hearing. We've been going doortodoor collecting petitions. We have an online petition. We have an online petition. There has been a huge outcry against the casino. Over the past 10 month, this opposition has grown. 704 people have submitted letters to the gaming board opposing the establishment. A mere 68 letters were submitted in support, which is a 10.3 percent margin of opposition. From April 15 to May 23rd, there were 144 letters opposing the casino and just four in support. That's a 36-to-one margin of opposition. The feedback doesn't even include the petitions. A petition was submitted by us on May 13. It had 1,744 distinct signatures. The petition was collected through a mix of online and hardcopy petitions. We review both petitions, and we remove duplicate entries. The name of a person who signs two petitions is only used once. At that point, there were 1,744 signatures. And there were 414 comments. We've been collecting signatures on these petitions ever since. We currently estimate that more than 2,500 people have signed these petitions. These petitions will be submitted to the Gaming Control Board as soon as the show airs. It is necessary to submit it before June 12, 2012. It was necessary to submit it before June 12. To prove their address, they provided their contact information as part of the petitions. The Gaming Control Board can also follow up with them to confirm their objection to the casino. This is a very well-documented petition. We know of no other opposition or petition that has been filed in Pennsylvania to oppose a casino, except for the one to stop Gettysburg's casino. pennsylvania casinos theres so much more than just gambling
