 Rules of Texas Holdem

Texas Hold'em is by far the most well-known form of online poker. Poker's simplest variation is a combination of strategy, luck, and skill that will keep players addicted and newbies wanting more.

Learn the basics of Texas Holdem

A full deck of 52 cards is dealt and players receive two 'hole cards', which are face-down. You can play with up to ten players (full ring), or two (heads-up).

One player is always the dealer. Two players must always post blinds -- small blind and huge blind.

Pre-flop betting occurs before the third and final round of community cards are dealt. No-Limit Hold'em is a game where players can all-in at any point. Pot-Limit Hold'em is a game where a player cannot bet more than the 'pot', or the factors of it. Limit Hold'em is a game where a player can only raise one blind.

A player can choose to fold (muck his card), check (invest not further money) and raise (increase the size of the pot).

The flop is awarded after the first round. Another round of betting follows.

There is another round of betting after the fourth card, known as the 'turn'.

The fifth community card, which is the last round of betting, is dealt.

The objective of the game, is to create the best five-card hand. The winner of this game wins the pot.

Here's a chart that summarises the Texas Hold'em hand rankings. You will rarely see a Royal Flush and Four of a Kind, but it does happen. Most players hit a pair. If the players are able to hit the same pair, the pot will be awarded to the player who has the highest 'kicker.

Steve's Ac Js is, for instance, on a 5c10d board Jh 2s 7s, His five card hand is Jh Js AC 10d 7s. This means that he has a pair of Jacks with an Ace Kicker. John holds KdJd. John holds Kd Jd. Texas Hold'em allows the ace to represent high or low. A straight, Ace to 5, or straight 10-Ace can be made. If the players are able to table the same hand, the pot will be split.

Setting up the table

We now have the basics. Let's take a look at how it works in practice. This screenshot was taken at Full Tilt Poker, one the most popular online poker sites. We'll help you understand the terms.

This is a $2/$4 Limit Hold'em Game. This means that each player must set blinds of $2 (smallblind) and $4(bigblind) respectively. In this example, the blinds are'spades42011’ and 'loques. Crudobad is a dealer.

Before the flop, he must be the first to act. This means that he is in the 'early position' and must act before the flop. He can choose to fold (commit zero money to the pot), flatcall (call big blind $4), or raise. Why is loque and spade in an early position? Even though they act last prior to the flop because they are on blinds they must act first every other'street' (after turn, river and flop). Your seat relative to the dealer determines your 'position. As he is usually the last player to act upon the flop or turn, the dealer is always in late place.

The more you can adjust your actions to the situation, the better. This is because your actions can be adjusted to reflect the actions of those around you. If you're in a late position, you can get more information about the holdings of your opponents.

Get started

Texas Hold'em is a lot about picking the right starting hand to play. Beginners should play tight. That means you can only play a few hands.

Hands like QQ, KK, and AA are very premium and should be played with a lot of aggression. Hands such as AK suited, JJ and JJ are powerful holdings. While we need to be more cautious when playing hands like AQ or pocket pairs such as 10,10, 9,9 and 11,10, they can still hold strong holdings. It's important to be cautious when playing marginal hands, such as A10, KQ, or KQ. This is because in full ring games, it's very likely that there is a better hand. Because there's a greater likelihood that someone will play after you, the tighter your game should be.

Because they have straight and flush potential, there is value in playing hands such as suited connections (6d 7d), in multi-way pots. If you are able to connect with the flip, these hands have the potential for you to make a huge pot. If you're getting the right pot-odds, (i.e. This will increase your chances of winning a large amount of money. These details will be covered in detail in subsequent articles.
